By | Home Ideas, Interior Design, Stress Free Living | No Comments

If you find yourself scrambling out of the front door every morning, rushing the kids to school and getting to work, only to stop and have to think about whether you turned the lights off or locked the door – you might have a pretty busy life.

There are many smart devices that can help make a busy life easier, and Norfolk Idea Center is proud to offer one that brings every aspect of smart device convenience to one home automation product: Control4.

On those mornings where you just don’t have time to do a walk-through of your home checking lights, electronics and entry points, a Control4 home automation system makes life easier by allowing you to control them all from one easy system. This means that after your kids are out the door and you’re ready to go, you can be sure your home is running efficiently and is safe while you’re away for the day with just a few easy touch-screen clicks.

The Control4 device is also compatible with other smart devices, like the Amazon Echo, making it even easier to turn your lights on, lock doors, and play music just by saying one sentence as you enter your home. The Control4 system is the perfect accessory for a busy household where every saved second counts towards relaxation and family time after a long day.

Setting up a home automation system can sound complicated, but the experts at Norfolk Idea Center make it easier than ever, doing the tough parts for you! Finding the Floors that Fit Your Style

By | Interior Design | No Comments

Furniture and décor are both important for setting the theme of your home’s interior, but the materials and colors you choose for your flooring and tile can really help you achieve the look you want. This may sound silly, but creating a cohesive design depends on all factors! Imagine trying to brighten a room while still having dark floors, or trying to create a beachy theme with dark stone tile in the kitchen and bathrooms.

So, how do you decide which flooring fits your style?

  1. Determine what theme or style you want to achieve. Do you spend a lot of time at home and just want something comfortable? You may look to rustic interiors for inspiration. Do you love minimalism and clean lines? Look into modern home design to see what might work for you.
  2. Think about color first. If you have a smaller home, using lighter colors can help brighten the space, making it appear larger and more open than it actually is. If you have a large space that seems a little too empty, use darker colors to make it feel more cozy and homely.
  3. Consider different materials. Do you want your home to feel luxurious and extravagant? Do you want to feel closer to nature, or to match the environment around your home? These are questions to consider when choosing between various hardwood and tile options.
  4. Assess your home activity levels. If you have pets and children running around your home, you may choose the stylish, yet durable vinyl options over the more expensive hardwood option.

Norfolk Idea Center is here to turn your ideas into reality, and provide ideas to match your lifestyle. Let us help you navigate the many design options today, and design an end product that works best for you! Visit us at 350 W 22nd St #101b in Norfolk to browse our selection, or call (757) 351-4550 to schedule a design consultation.

Before you know it fall will be in full effect in Hampton Roads, and we can’t wait! This is a great time of year to get some of those home design projects completed before the holidays (and family and friends) arrive. What are some areas you’ve been thinking about updating around your home?

Here are some ideas that are a favorite among homeowners:

Update Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures
Something as simple as updating ceiling fans and light fixtures can make a big difference in bringing together your design, and adding that extra touch to your home. You may be surprised though to learn that many modern ceiling fans are Energy Star rated to save you money, and they also use recycled materials and packaging!

Home Automation
You have the smart phone, now you can get the smart home! Your lighting, energy, entertainment and security can now be controlled automatically, giving you peace of mind like never before. Take control, and remain aware of what’s going on in your home, even when you’re not there.

Fireplaces
Fall is a great time to think about a gas fireplace. What’s better than a warm place to enjoy with family and friends during the holidays? A warm place to gather, where you control the temperature, and can start it with the push of a button or a remote! We’ll work with you on the design side, and will recommend amazing companies for the installation.

Closet Systems
The space in standard closets is often underutilized. With so many new and innovative products available, you can now take any space and make it work for your own personal style. Do you need an entire room for your shoes alone, or do you need a place for all those cardigans you love? We’ll work to understand your preferences and get you set up with the closet and cabinetry that suits you best.

These are just a few areas we can assist you with. Our design team looks forward to working with you. Stop by our showroom, or give us a call at 757-351-4550. If you need a little inspiration visit our instagram page today!

Update Your Mudroom This Summer

By | Home Ideas, Interior Design, Stress Free Living, Uncategorized | No Comments

As you consider a renovation to your own mudroom or entryway here are some things to ask. First, what purpose does this space serve? Busy individuals with kids still in the home (or grandparents with frequent visits from the grandkids) need space to store shoes, coats, dog leashes and keys. They desire a space that is functional- allowing quick access to those items you may need when leaving the house, while providing a space to sit and put on shoes, coats, etc.

Others may desire an entryway that focuses less on function, and more on design. We’re only a phone call (or visit to our showroom) away from helping you identify the best look and feel for you and your family. As you start to dream up your ideal entry space, here are some ideas we’ve seen and love!

Bench with Storage
This is probably one of the more common solutions we’ve seen. A beautiful bench can offer seating for putting on shoes and coats, while also offering storage. Kids can have their own bin to store their items in, and can access them easily. Add coat hooks above the bench, and you’re covered, while keeping your entryway open for foot traffic. We have a variety of cabinetry options that can suit this purpose beautifully!

Converted Coat Closet
Do you have a closet in your entryway? What about turning this into an alcove. We can install benches in these spaces, and utilize the space above for coat hooks or cubbies. Even better, how about a deep sink for washing up before coming inside? Or even a half bath to keep muddy footprints out of the main living areas. The result is beautiful and incredibly functional, while taking up no extra space in your home.

Decor
If you aren’t in need of storage or seating solutions in your entryway, we have endless ideas for beautifying this space. Come in to the Norfolk Idea Center today to discuss your style preferences, and let us help make your entry space welcoming, and memorable.

1. Spring is a great time to brighten your kitchen with new cabinets or countertops! 4. Change fabrics for a bright and airy feel. Try a new bedcover with clean, crisp spring colors or new towels to spruce up your bathroom. Photo Credit Lisa Clark

5. Letting natural light in improves your mood and gives your space a sunny feel. Spring is the perfect time to get new windows, or you can choose to add new shades, blinds, shutters or sheers to your existing windows! 6. New ceiling fans and updated light fixtures always add a fresh feel to a room. Try lighter colors rather than dark woods. A bright white table lamp ceiling, fan, or white pendulum lighting may be just the thing to freshen up your room. Photo Credit Mary Walker
